Article 1 In a Series of Article On Single Parent Dating Tips

Introduction

Can single parents date again?  Of course they can!  But having children can make dating more challenging.

For one thing, you have to balance your commitments to your kids with the time demands a new relationship takes.

For another thing, you may be introducing a new person to your kids’ lives and that can cause confusion and tension.

Many people seem to have an opinion about single parents, and their advice when it comes to your private life is: take up needlepoint or woodworking. Forget them. A single parent can date, seriously or casually. A single parent can be seen out dancing on a Saturday night. A single parent can even have sex!

However, dating when you have children is not like dating before kids.  There are some general guidelines you need to follow when you are introducing a new adult into your children’s lives.

Before You Start to Date Again

Don’t jump right into the soup and think you should start by checking out the online personals.  Remember that when you start dating, it doesn’t just affect you.  Starting a new relationship will affect your whole family.  So, talk to your kids about why mommy or daddy might see other people occasionally.

Before you start dating, begin by taking care of yourself.  Too often, single parents who are primary caretakers have to balance so many things that they let their own self care go down the drain.

But taking care of yourself shows self respect.  It also reflects your personal boundaries.  If you invest time and energy taking care of yourself, you are ready to invest in new personal relationships.  When you make the commitment to take care of yourself, you are practicing dating someone else.  If you can’t take care of yourself right now, do you really think you have the emotional reserves to be there for another person?

Discover How To Find Love Again

You may not want to start by finding dates.  Instead, look to develop all kinds of friendships.  Look around your job or the people you meet from your kids’ activities and find people that you would like to get to know better.  Establish friendships.  These can be with men or women.  The friendships will enrich your life.

If a friendship leads to romance, that is great!  But, even if it doesn’t, your new friends are likely to introduce you to potential dates themselves.

By beginning to actively socialize, you are actually preparing your children for dating in the future.  They will begin to see that you have social needs that they alone cannot meet.  Once they are accustomed to you going out from time to time, dating won’t be a shock.  Get out of the house.  Hire a sitter if you need to.  Think of it as preparation for a lively dating life.

Another advantage of developing your social life is that your kids will get used to you going out without them.  Your social life won’t threaten them.  Then when you do start to date again, the children won’t see a dramatic “shift” in your routine.  Mommy (or daddy) is just going out to dinner with a friend.

Prepare your kids for your dating future.  They should know whether you are building casual friendships or whether you hope to marry.  You should be honest with them, but it’s also okay to tell them that you aren’t prepared to answer specific questions at a given time.

Your children are much less likely to resist another person coming in their life down the road if you lay the proper groundwork ahead of time.

Write A Love Note To Keep Love Fresh

Henry wasn't much of a communicator.  He expressed his love by doing things.  It would take him two months to work up to 'I love you' but he would clean a woman's gutters after a second date.

But when he fell in love with Sarah, he felt like he needed to really express himself.

On several occasions, he tried to put things into words, but his verbalization's weren't working.

So, despite the fact that he wasn't all that comfortable writing, he took a stab at a love note.  He gave himself plenty of time and worked on it for over a week.  When he finally had the words just right, he copied them onto nice paper, rolled up the note and stuck it in a bottle.

When Sarah received the note she felt that it was the greatest gift anyone had ever given her.  Because it was out of character, because it was hard for him, she valued it always.

You don’t have to be J.K. Rawlings to write a love note.  But if you do, it will be more valuable to your partner than Harry Potter was to Ms. Rawlings.

In these days of email and instant messaging, writing a love note by hand is one of the most romantic things you can do.  Write a short note about 'what I like about you.'  Write a poem (it doesn't have to rhyme).  Or, pour your heart out over several pages.  These notes will be saved and cherished for a long time.

Best Ways To Get Her Back

If you have any artistic sense, adding a drawing or sketch is a nice touch.

But, the point here isn't so much about writing skill or artistry as sincerity.  Write a sweet sentiment from your heart.  Write something gentle and touching.  And, try not to make it sexually graphic.  This is about romance not sex.

It’s a good idea to buy a nice sheet of paper to write the note on.  It makes it clear that you are making an effort.  Don't type your note.  If your handwriting is lousy, it’s okay to print.  Write in ink – pencil fades and he or she will want to keep this love note for a long time.

You may want to consider writing the letter out first and then transferring it to your nice paper.  Try not to misspell too much and make sure your note is legible.  You're not looking to score points with an English teacher, but you also don't want the mechanics to get in the way of the message.

Finally, make sure that your love note doesn't fall into the wrong hands.  Consider leaving it on his or her pillow or someplace else where no one else will look.  Remember also that X-rated notes may come back to haunt you – make it a love not a smut note.

Don't send a romantic note to their work place because a colleague is apt to discover it.

Relationship Advice For Men Who Want To Keep Their Girlfriends

Okay, so your girlfriend probably won’t walk out on you because you left your socks on the floor, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still a few critical factors that, if ignored, could have her heading for the door.

Even if you think you know what makes your girlfriend tick, you may be surprised at some of the things you’ve been overlooking.

Express your love

I know what you’re thinking: “But I do show my love! I bought her a…” Stop right there.

Unfortunately, material gifts and even the amount of time and energy you spend helping go right over some women’s heads. Many women don’t truly feel loved unless they hear the “I love you” fairly frequently.

No, your girlfriend hasn’t forgotten all the nice things you’ve done; she just thinks maybe your feelings have changed since then. Yeah, that’s right: since yesterday. See, the thing is women continually re-assess their relationships. Men tend to get comfortable and assume if there are no fights, then everything’s dandy. That’s exactly how so many guys get blindsided by break ups introduced with “Honey, we need to talk.”

So go ahead and tell her in so many words that you love her. If you have a hard time saying it, write a little note and slip it in her wallet or stick it on the bathroom mirror.  If that’s still a little to awkward for you, make a point of thanking her for something routine like making dinner or acknowledging something she’s done well.

Listen

Imagine starting an important conversation with your girlfriend or wife only to notice her staring into space as you talk. Wouldn’t you feel a little rejected? This is the same situation a lot of women face with their boyfriends or husbands, who often don’t even notice they’re spacing out. When you’re girlfriend talks, try to put aside what your doing and really listen.

That doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to have some quiet time to yourself, though. Whether you’re trying to finish a report for work the next day or just want to watch the game, if you gently explain that you’d rather have the chat at a later time, a real lady will give you your space.

Use honesty wisely

As much as we may want to believe honesty is the best policy, anyone with a little life experience will tell you it isn’t always. While outright lies are a no-no, a little tact and diplomacy can go a long way towards keeping peace in the house.

What that means is the correct answer to “Do I look fat in this?” is not “No, you look 10 pounds lighter,” but something like “Can’t say. You look good to me no matter what you wear.” Sound corny? Try it sometime and I bet you’ll like the result.

Being tactful doesn’t mean you should keep quite about things that really bother you, though. It’s better to bring problems to light in than let your resentment simmer and risk blowing up at her one day.

When both partners are willing have a little patience and keep an open mind, love relationships don’t have to been filled with frustration and drama. Get some good relationship advice from men from the right source and your relationships should be smooth sailing from here on out.
